On Fruitloops Episode 11, Beth and Wendy discuss the life, crimes, and victims of Timothy Wilson Spencer, a serial killer known as the “Southside Strangler.”
In 1987, Spencer raped and strangled four women during an 11-week killing spree in Virginia. Investigators had little circumstantial evidence, and Spencer never confessed. But he left behind something that would change criminal investigations forever: his DNA.
Using what was then groundbreaking technology, investigators matched DNA from the crime scenes to Spencer, making him the first serial killer in the United States convicted with the help of DNA evidence. The technology had previously made history in the UK, where DNA helped convict Colin Pitchfork of murdering two teenage girls.
Even more chilling, most of Spencer’s murders occurred while he was living in a Richmond halfway house after serving part of a burglary sentence. The killings took place on weekends when Spencer was signed out of the facility.
